How much is Sure Start Maternity Grant?

You will get a tax-free one-time payment of £500 and there is no need to pay it back. However, you may receive more depending on the situation.

Children under 16 Total amount for twins Total amount for triplets
1 or more (none of them being from multiple births) £500 £1,000
You’ve already had twins £0 £500
You’ve already had triplets £0 £0

However, you may not receive the same amount with more children. In fact, if you already had twins, you would instead receive £500 for triplets. In short, the amount of children you have had before, even if you are still eligible, will affect whether you get more or no money. You will never get more for twins, but may for triplets, quadruplets, ect….

As said above, you are eligible if you are giving birth to your first child. In such a case, you would receive the normal of £500, one time. However, you may receive more. Let’s say that you have triplets. If they are your first children, you may receive £1,000. Same thing if you already had a child not from multiple births.

Additionally, if you had a multiple birth with more or the same amount of children than the multiple birth you are having now, you may not receive a payment. For example, if you already gave birth to twins, you will not receive £500 towards another birth of twins. Same thing if you gave birth to triplets and are now having twins.

Not that your Sure Start Maternity Grant will not count towards your benefit cap, or the maximum amount of benefits that one can receive.
